Futures Bet

A wager on an outcome that resolves later, such as a league championship or a tournament winner decided over a full season.

A futures bet stakes money on a result that will not be settled until a later date, frequently weeks or months out. The most frequent applications include selecting a team to capture a championship, a player to claim a season-long award such as MVP, or a club to exceed a defined win total across a campaign. Operators post futures markets in nearly every major sport, spanning the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, soccer leagues, and the top golf and tennis events.

Since the wager is locked in long before the result is known, the quoted odds run higher than the prices a bettor would encounter near the deciding event. That makes futures capable of returning sizable payouts relative to the stake. The cost of that upside is that capital stays committed for a long stretch, and the variance involved far exceeds that of a single-game bet.

Example

Ahead of the NFL season, you stake $25 on the Cincinnati Bengals to win the Super Bowl at +3000. At that price, each $1 wagered returns $30 in profit should the Bengals capture the title.

  • Stake: $25
  • Odds: +3000
  • Potential profit: $750
  • Total payout: $775 (profit plus original stake)

If the Bengals win the Super Bowl, you collect $775. If they are knocked out anywhere along the season or playoff path, the $25 stake is lost. The position stays live until the Super Bowl is played, so your funds are tied up for the full season.

Key Points

  • Long time horizon: Futures settle only once the relevant event finishes, potentially months after placement. Your stake remains committed across that entire window.
  • Higher odds and larger potential payouts: The elevated uncertainty pushes futures prices well above game-day numbers, which appeals to bettors targeting large returns on modest stakes.
  • Odds fluctuate over time: Operators continually recalibrate futures prices in response to performance, injuries, trades, and other inputs. Betting early can lock in a sharper number before a team’s outlook strengthens.
  • Available across many markets: In addition to title winners, futures cover division winners, conference champions, regular-season win totals, individual awards (MVP, Rookie of the Year), and more.
  • Cash-out options may be available: Certain sportsbooks let you cash out a futures position before resolution, securing partial profit or trimming losses when the outlook has shifted since placement.
